Responses in Soil Carbon and Nitrogen Fractionation after Prescribed Burning in the Montseny Biosphere Reserve (NE Iberian Peninsula)

چکیده

Prescribed fire is one of the most widely-used management tools to recover encroached rangelands. Fire has been reported cause changes in soil physical and chemical properties. However, legacy effects former plant species on responses remains unknown. The effect extant carbon (C) nitrogen (N) fractionation distribution after prescribed burning topsoil (0–5 cm 5–10 cm) was investigated Mediterranean shrublands Montseny. We sampled soils under five vegetation patch types: Cytisus scoparius L., Calluna vulgaris Erica arborea Pteridium aquilinum Cladonia biocrusts, pre- post-burning. Multivariate analysis C N fractions showed that legume biocrust were differentiated. Vegetation types tended respond differently burning, Cytisus, showing strongest response. Total N, sand decreased 0–5 layer. Conversely, silt, as well clay increased with depth burning. This study will be helpful for understanding ecological their possible consequences when planning

Grazing alone is not enough to maintain landscape diversity in the Montseny Biosphere Reserve

Conservative land-use over the past few decades has converted the Montseny Biosphere Reserve (Spain) from the original open, patchy landscape to almost continuous woodland. Small ruminant grazing is virtually the only major remaining utilisation activity yet little is known about its role in the changing vegetation of the Reserve. This study was undertaken to determine the effects of current gr...

Foraging ecology of five toothed whale species in the Northwest Iberian Peninsula, inferred using carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios

The feeding ecology and habitat use of the most frequently sighted and/or regularly reported stranded or by-caught toothed whale species of the North Western Iberian Peninsula (NWIP) were examined, with a special focus on their trophic position (TP) and relationships with their prey. With this aim, the stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ 13 C) and nitrogen (δ 15 N) of common dolphin (Delphinus d...

Mapping structural characteristics of the coastal and island forms of mangroves in the Hara Biosphere Reserve

Given the importance of availability sufficient and accurate information on the structural characteristics of mangroves to develop conservation and restoration programs for these ecosystems, this study investigates and maps the structural characteristics of the coastal and island forms of the mangroves in the Hara Biosphere Reserve. To this end, through a field inventory (32 sample plots with t...

Total Carbon and Nitrogen in Mineral Soil After 26 Years of Prescribed Fire: Long Valley and Fort Valley Experimental Forests

Prescribed fire was introduced to high density ponderosa pine stands at Fort Valley and Long Valley Experimental Forests in 1976. This paper reports on mineral soil total carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) at Long Valley. Total soil C and N levels were highly variable and exhibited an increasing, but inconsistent, concentration trend related to burn interval. Total N ranged from 0.1 to 0.45%. Randomly...
